HOLLYWOOD star Damian Lewis caused a stir when he turned up to watch a junior football match near York.

The Homeland actor and his wife, actress Helen McCrory, were on the touchline of a game between Hamilton Panthers and Tockwith Juniors at the weekend.

They were at the under-11s fixture to watch their nephew in action for York-based Hamilton Panthers.

The match, played at Tockwith, near Wetherby, finished 2-1 to Hamilton.

The couple stayed for the whole game and had pictures taken with the teams.

Gary Allam, the club secretary for Tockwith, said he understood the actor had been in York with his family for the weekend.

He said: “He came over to the match and one of the parents noticed him.

“He was keeping himself to himself but word quickly spread around that he was in attendance.

“After the match he agreed to have his picture taken with the sqaud. The players were very excited but I think the mums might have been even more excited.

“He was a nice guy.”

Matt Reeder, the coach for Tockwith, said: “We were just delighted to meet him after the final whistle when he came over and congratulated the lads on a fine game.”

Lewis, 42, has the starring role as Sergeant Nicholas Brody in Channel 4’s psychological thriller series Homeland and has appeared in Band of Brothers and The Forsyte Saga.
