THE VAST majority of convicted criminals in North Yorkshire and the north-east avoid prison, new research has shown.
According to a report by the Centre for Crime Prevention, 93.5 per cent of offenders sentenced at courts in the two regions are not given an immediate custodial sentence, with more than 70,000 avoiding custody in 2012.
Peter Cuthbertson, author of the report and the centre’s director, said: “The courts are utterly failing to show they take crime seriously.”
Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said the most serious offenders were still being jailed.
