I AGREE with S McClaren over the issue of the old Airspeed factory in Piccadilly (Letters, January 13).
This is an iconic part of York’s industrial heritage. It should be sold to the Yorkshire Air Museum so that it could be transformed into a visitor attraction.
Why do we need yet another hotel blighting our historic sky line? If the council is so much in need of revenue they should not have wasted so much of the taxpayers’ money desecrating King’s Square, along with the 20mph blanket speed limit and the Arts Barge.
Coun James Alexander thinks that a fitting tribute to Airspeed would be to mount a plaque on the wall. It would be a more fitting to retain a living tribute for visitors and the people of York to enjoy.
The factory had connections with Nevil Shute and Amy Johnson, so it would be unforgivable to destroy it.
