I THINK Carole Tucker of London has got the wrong end of the stick when she says some members of the Labour Party are wealthy (Letters, January 14). When Labour return to power at the next election they will have a huge job ending the mass poverty the Tories have created.

That is the difference between Labour and Tory. But it all comes from breeding.

Tories still have this Victorian idea of upstairs and downstairs. We do the work, they gain the rewards. The big difference in the 21st century is that there are no factory jobs to soak up all the spare labour and it has got to the point now that you may need a degree to serve a cup of tea.

• FUNNY thing memory and how people manipulate facts, rather like E Sawdon regarding the miners’ strikes (Letters, January 11).

Therefore it is good when actual documents are released which produce written facts in black and white. In the case of Margaret Thatcher, such documents now prove that she lied about her hit-list of pit closures.

Similarly E Sawdon misleads about Ted Heath who actually fell on his own sword when he went to the country under the slogan “Who Governs Britain?”

The miners went on strike in the early 1970s for the first time in 50 years concerning poverty wages.

Thatcher sought to destroy the miners as they were considered the major obstacle against her policy to give the working class a good thrashing and dismantle UK manufacturing in favour of globalisation.

Her working-class war cost the UK about £30 billion at the time.

If the miners hadn’t made a stand against this ruthless bully, Thatcher’s pits closure programme and demolition of workers rights would have accelerated.

We have the same problem today in that the cost of living outstrips wages with the Tories once again responsible. When will the political class ensure adequate disposable income for everyone as they do for themselves?
