YORK Schoolboy Under-14s extended their unbeaten league run to four games by beating Spen Valley 4-1.

Dan Davison (2), Joe Kemp and Alex McMillan were on target during the York University clash to mark a fine return to action following the festive break.

Man-of-the-match Kemp gave York an early lead when his cross sailed over the visiting ’keeper into the net.

With Will Mouncher prompting and probing in midfield, Zac Lawrence then headed just over the bar before being involved, along with Max Tweddle and McMillan, to create the opening for Davison to slot in first time from six yards for the second goal.

A further Lawrence drive drew a fine save out of the Spen ’keeper but York went three up when, from a right-wing Kemp cross, Davison controlled the ball and turned to fire into the corner of the net from inside the penalty area.

Charlie Marshall went on to see a shot saved but Spen reduced the deficit before half-time with a header from a free-kick.

After the restart, central defenders David Barber and Joe Kilvington worked hard to repel any visiting attacks and, at the other end, Josh Rogerson hit the bar after cutting in from the left on a mazy run and also had another shot cleared off the line.

York’s fourth goal came from a deep Lawrence free-kick with Owen Marshall crossing the ball back in for McMillan, who forced the ball home under pressure from a Spen defender.

Tweddle went on to call the Spen ’keeper into action for a final time as the hosts finished on top.

York Schoolboy U12s also kicked off 2014 with a 4-1 home win against Spen Valley.

Goal-poacher Joe Crosby set the hosts on their way by netting a fine first-half hat-trick with Dominic Jackson, Charlie Ward and Sam Newsome all claiming assists.

Full-backs Charlie King and Joseph Hobson were also acting like wingers to add to a thrilling attacking display.

After the break, Spen were awarded a soft penalty which was duly despatched to make the score 3-1 but man-of-the-match Newsome hammered in a long-range strike to settle the game in York’s favour.

However, a hat-trick of wins over Spen Valley was thwarted when York U13s were beaten 2-0 at home despite the athletic efforts of Jack Leeming.
