THE school friends of Jamie Inglis have remembered the brave seven-year-old on the anniversary of his death.

Popular Lord Deramore’s Primary School pupil Jamie died a year ago following a battle with the aggressive childhood cancer neuroblastoma.

To mark Jamie’s first “angel anniversary”, bubbles were given to children at the Heslington school as they gathered with Leeds boxer Stevi Mennell, who presented a cheque in Jamie’s memory.

The boxer was so touched by Jamie’s story he donated the purse of his first professional fight to Jamie’s Lasting Legacy Appeal.

West Yorkshire Boxing Promotions, who promoted Stevi’s first fight, matched Stevi’s winnings, donating a total of £1,800 to the appeal.

Vicky Inglis, Jamie’s mother who has become a regional co-ordinator for Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance UK, which supports children suffering from the childhood cancer and their families, said: “The cheque presentation on Jamie’s first angel anniversary was a great way to recognise the fundraising efforts of others who continue to be inspired by Jamie’s story.

“A nice touch was having three of Jamie’s school friends meet Stevi Mennell before the assembly.

“They enjoyed blowing the bubbles, a gift from our family to all children at Lord Deramore’s.

“The whole school enjoyed our assembly, learning about Stevi’s first professional fight and how he won it in Jamie’s honour. It also gave us a chance to thank Stevi and all of Jamie’s school community. What could have been a sad day was in fact a very uplifting and positive one. Thank you to Mrs Powley for allowing us to hijack the Wednesday school assembly.”

The money raised will go the Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance UK (NCCA UK) who will use the donation to support families and further research into neuroblastoma.
