SO 40,000 drivers have now been fined on Lendal Bridge (The Press, January 16).

When analysing their data I do hope City of York Council takes into account these 40,000 vehicles that were still using Lendal Bridge and were not sitting with the rest of us in the very slow-moving traffic elsewhere in the city, which would have made our journeys even longer.

It is now time to put an end to this costly farce.

• I READ your article of January 16 with regard to the Lendal Bridge saga with great interest.

This then turned to amazement, finally grounding in absolute total astonishment, that 40,794 people have blatantly flouted our beloved council’s decision to close the bridge to all but bus drivers during daytime.

Why would 40,794 people flagrantly cross the bridge at a potential cost of £60? There are several possible answers.

The most obvious is that these people did not have the time or inclination to take the lengthy route over other bridges. Added to which they must be aware that the money goes to a good cause, helping the council do whatever Labour councils do to cities.

Also after hundreds of motorists crossed the bridge “illegally”, you might have thought the council would consider the possibility that the ban was not signed adequately – and that drivers were wandering innocently into a £60 fine.

Never mind, we must accept the good news that if you can actually manage to get around the ring road to Rawcliffe Bar you will then gain “significantly”. Added to this we rest in the sure knowledge that the council is in possession of monies it would not have dreamed of otherwise.
