IT NOW looks most unlikely that the £1.4 billion Allerton Park waste incinerator project will go ahead (The Press, January 14).
City of York Council, the joint partner in this scheme, must now tell us exactly how much ratepayers’ money has been wasted on this flight of fancy. Just what were our council leaders, with an annual £120 million budget, thinking of getting involved in financial matters way out of their league?
It won’t happen, but how I wish those councillors responsible for this reckless waste of public money could be made to personally repay this hubristic extravagance.
They inhabit a pie-in-the-sky culture, which is so very easy when spending someone else’s money, and meanwhile the basics that we expect are reduced or stopped due to a shortage of funds.
