CHEERLEADERS have given two visiting locomotives an American-style farewell as they prepare to leave York forever.
The National Railway Museum (NRM) is about to wave goodbye to Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada, the famous Mallard’s sister locomotives which have been part of the Great Gathering at the Leeman Road site.
Yesterday was the last time visitors could see all the locos at the museum's Great Hall, with a send-off being provided by a small display team from the University of York's York Hornets squad. Their usual “2, 4, 6, 8” cheer was changed to “4, 4, 6, 8”, Mallard's number.
About 250,000 visitors visited the NRM last year to mark the 75th anniversary of Mallard breaking the world steam speed record at two Great Gathering events showcasing the iconic locomotive and all five of its surviving sister locos.
