TO mark the first National Voter Registration Day next month, a local MP is encouraging schools to teach young people about their democratic responsibilities.
February 5 marks the anniversary of the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832, which first introduced voter registration.
Nigel Adams, the MP for Selby and Ainsty, said he hoped the first National Voter Registration Day, organised by Bite The Ballot, would see businesses, schools and community organisations encourage young people to register to vote.
Mr Adams said: “It’s been 180 years since the Great Reform Act, and I very much look forward to seeing schools and local organisations across the constituency marking the date by encouraging young people to participate in our democracy. I’m writing to schools in the area asking them to join this great initiative.”
