I WATCHED the National Television Awards on Wednesday, but only the first half hour.

There is no doubt that the contenders and winners of the awards deserve some adulation.

From the beginning of the programme the presenters encouraged rowdy applause as each celebrity was introduced – and before, during and after each clip.

The result was almost non-stop caterwauling, screaming and shouting. Presumably this lasted throughout the whole programme, but my remote control changed channels.

Even a cup final at Wembly would have produced a noise more pleasing to the ear.
