SUPER-SUB Ritchie Deighton struck a minute from time to earn York Schoolboy Under-13s a well-deserved 1-1 draw against English Schools’ Cup semi-finalists East Riding.
Deighton’s fierce free-kick ensured the spoils were shared against York’s table-topping Yorkshire League opponents, who had taken the lead 15 minutes earlier with a close-range effort.
A quiet first half was followed by an even second period in which Jack Atkinson and Jacob Little had chances to give the Minstermites the lead.
At the other end, Jamie O’Connell was outstanding with last-ditch tackles and goal-line clearances.
The goals then followed and, at the final whistle, York could reflect on great shifts from Alfie Atkinson, Will Owen and Reece Botterill with midfield debutant Louie Kirkham also impressing and O’Connell taking the man-of-the-match honours.
The U13s will hope to continue the good work today when they welcome Bradford to the University of York.
Another last-minute strike by George Brown secured a 3-2 triumph for York U15s against East Riding.
Red-hot striker and man-of-thematch Adam Wilson also gave the opposition a lesson in finishing with his team’s first two goals.
Wilson opened the scoring after receiving the ball from a poor clearance just inside a crowded penalty area.
He made a yard of space with a delightful drag back, before smashing the ball into the roof of the net.
East Riding equalised midway through the half after York ’keeper Dave Howard had done well to stop the initial effort on goal.
But Wilson produced another magnificent finish out of nothing as East Riding threatened to take control.
This time, the ace marksman rifled an unstoppable shot from 20 yards past a startled ’keeper and into the top right-hand corner.
Sam Emmot at the back and Ben Burdett in centre midfield were outstanding for York and full-backs Jake Humphries and Jarrad Benson also impressed.
Will Hall did well on the left flank too following his return from injury and Aron Clarke stiffened up the defence when they most needed it but, with ten minutes remaining, the visitors levelled for a second time after the hosts failed to clear a corner.
As the clock ticked down to the final minute and, with the game heading for a draw, there was to be a final twist.
Slick passing between Elliot Fenton and Luca Colville led to the latter trying his luck from long range.
The East Riding ’keeper looked to have the midfielder’s effort covered but, as the ball bounced and spilled out of his hands, Brown pounced and poked home the winner.
The U15s travel to Bradford today for a friendly fixture.
Prolific striker Joe Crosby was named the man of the match as he bagged a brace in York U12s’ second league victory of 2014.
Dominic Jackson was also on target in a 3-0 win against Harrogate and Craven.
Stout defending from York’s back four of Joe Hobson, Jamie Higginbotham, Lucas Wilson and Charlie King kept Harrogate at bay during the early exchanges before, on a counter attack, Crosby latched on to a through ball and calmly tucked the ball into the net from an acute angle to give the Minstermites an 18th-minute lead.
After the break, Crosby got his second goal following fine work down the right by the ever-industrious Charlie Ward.
Jackson then sealed the win with a fine solo goal.
