A ROW has broken out over a leaflet picturing two York political campaigners by a salt bin.
The Focus newsletter, circulated in Osbaldwick, showed Liberal Democrats Richard Hill and Linda Maggs standing by a salt bin in the village, with the message: “The Lib Dem team across York has been leading the fight to save grit bins from the axe.”
Osbaldwick parish chairman and Independent York councillor Mark Warters claimed the leaflet clearly implied that the bins in Osbaldwick were provided by City of York Council and in danger of being scrapped under the authority’s cuts.
However, the village’s salt bins were, in fact, provided by the parish council, which now wanted an apology.
But Mr Hill wrote to the parish, claiming the campaign in Osbaldwick had focused on areas beyond the Parish Council’s jurisdiction and the newsletter was factually accurate.
Dean Knapper, constituency organiser for York Outer Liberal Democrats, added: “All much ado about nothing really... We never once claim that Osbaldwick salt bins are looked after by the council.”
