YORK’S bid to be recognised as a “White Ribbon” city fighting against domestic abuse has gained the support of two local MPs.

Hugh Bayley and Julian Sturdy joined Lord Mayor Coun Julie Gunnell at the Mansion House for an event raising awareness of domestic abuse issues.

White Ribbon status is given to cities and organisations which show they are committed to changing the social norms that lead to` violence and abuse against women.

It promotes prevention activities, better awareness of the issues and services aimed at stopping domestic violence against women and children.

Coun Gunnell said: “I am delighted that Hugh Bayley MP and Julian Sturdy MP are supporting the White Ribbon campaign. The problem of domestic violence and sexual abuse is not often spoken about and this campaign looks to publicly raise the issue.

Both MPs said they were pleased to support the campaign against domestic violence and the trauma it causes.

The city council is aiming to get White Ribbon recognition for York by Easter this year, and is also supporting the national This Is Abuse campaign aimed at teenagers.
