THE tyre fire at a recycling plant in Sherburn in Elmet could take another fortnight to burn itself out.
North Yorkshire Police said today that officers from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service remained at the Newgen plant and had advised that the blaze was expected to burn itself out over the next 10 to 14 days.
"Weather and wind conditions are changeable over the weekend and will affect the direction and height of the plume which continues to reduce in size," said a spokeswoman.
"The advice to residents is to go about their daily business but if they are affected by the direction of the smoke plume, they are advised to follow the usual advice and stay indoors with their windows and doors closed."
She said a joint investigation by North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, with support from other agencies, was continuing.
"A 51-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the investigation. Following questioning, he was released on police bail pending further inquiries."
She urged anyone with information to call police on 101, email Sinead.Brocken@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk, or call Crimestoppers anonymmously on 0800 555 111.
