SCHOOL children and teachers have gathered in York to celebrate efforts across Yorkshire to promote fair trade.

The Fairtrade in Yorkshire School Awards 2014 was held in Temple Hall at York St John University.

Among the schools to be presented with a 2014 Fairtrade in Yorkshire School Award from the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Julie Gunnell, was Applefields, Cawood CE Primary School, Killinghall CE Primary School, Riccall Community Primary School and Bootham School.

While giving out the awards, Coun Gunnell told the hall: “I'm extremely pleased an honoured to be here today. All these young people are a credit to young people in York and the surrounding districts.”

The event heard a human rights and fair-trade-inspired short story read by Tom Haygarth, a pupil at Fulford School and saw children and teachers take part in fair trade workshops.

Coun Linsay Cunningham-Cross, the Council's Fairtrade Champion, said: “It’s great to be hosting the Fairtrade in Yorkshire School Awards in York again this year.”
