THE 2014-15 football season will mark the 60th anniversary of perhaps the greatest period in York City’s history. The feat of reaching the FA Cup semi-final that season, and beating so many good teams along the way, was a wonderful achievement.
As an eight-year-old boy then, I still have vivid memories of the cup campaign and especially of beating the mighty Spurs at a snowy Bootham Crescent in February 1955.
That day Billy Fenton gave the England international full back Alf Ramsey a real run around and Norman Wilkinson scored a memorable goal with a magnificent header.
Hopefully the club will mark the achievements of 60 years ago, but I would like to suggest that the club, if only for that season, revert to the red and white shirts, white shorts and black socks with a red top, worn by that great team.
Forgan, Phillips, Howe… how those names still trip off the tongue!
Happy Days for the Happy Wanderers.
Ian Johnson, Yell, Shetland Isles.
