FAILING to upgrade a rail line near York as part of the HS2 scheme will see “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” being missed, a city MP has warned.
A spur at Church Fenton is intended to link the high-speed route with the conventional line near York.
Hugh Bayley, who represents York Central, said the stretch of track near York must be improved to allow HS2 trains to pass through the city. He said this would also benefit people in Scarborough, Selby, Harrogate and Thirsk.
Making his response to the consultation on the second phase of HS2, which closes on Friday, Mr Bayley said: “I want the Secretary of State for Transport to consider my proposal and then give it the go-ahead, as high-speed rail will benefit the whole region by creating jobs and boosting economic growth.
“The decision is due to be announced by the end of the year and I hope it will contain good news and HS2 will come to York.”
