MYSTERIOUS inscriptions on the windows of a Jacobean manor have left its owners baffled, writes Lewis Pennock.
Clare and Mark Oglesby are on a mission to discover the meaning of the text that appears on some of the stained glass windows at Goldsborough Hall, near Knaresborough.
The panes, which are inscribed with ancient Arabic, were installed in the 1920s. They were gifted to the former occupants of the hall – Princess Mary and her husband – by a Sunni Muslim cleric from Jerusalem.
The Grade II listed building is home to a range of stained glass windows dating back to the 17th century.
Clare said: “We know that the windows are inscribed with ornate, flowing Arabic but we are intrigued to know exactly what they say.
“Our search for an expert in ancient Arabic has so far drawn a blank. We would love anyone out there with knowledge in this area to contact us.”
The couple are asking anyone who may be able to help to contact them 01423 867 321.
