EXPECTATION sits lightly on these young shoulders.
The 22-year-old is already being acclaimed as one of acoustic music’s most promising talents. Her third record is an assured and exemplary set which has commercial appeal and sufficient guile to appeal to critics too.
The sound is akin to Alison Krauss, unsurprisingly since Jarosz is a banjo and mandolin prodigy.
Her voice is smooth but also not distinctive. Recorded with her touring band Alex Hargreaves (fiddle) and Nathaniel Smith (cello), the production is superb; no needless embellishments here.
While the set has two eye-catching covers, her version of Dylan’s Simple Twist of Fate, so simple and powerful live, doesn’t add greatly to the proceedings here.
Far better are her own songs such as Gone Too Soon which ring true and timeless. On this showing and from reaction to her live shows, Jarosz looks set for a bright future.
