BETH Nielsen Chapman wouldn’t give away only her last Rolo; she would part with the whole packet on the evidence of her songwriting generosity.
UnCovered, so named at the suggestion of Whispering Bob Harris, brings together songs she wrote but never recorded and which instead became hits or covers by the likes of Faith Hill, Don Williams, Tanya Tucker and Willie Nelson.
No fewer than seven of them topped sundry American charts. On the Oscar Wildeometer of two losses representing carelessness, Beth must be off the scale, but she had “too many songs to find time to record them all”… until now, when she has been joined by guests galore, Kim Carnes, Duane Eddy, Phil Cunningham and John McCusker among them.
Initially, she wanted to call this reclamation project Recovered, which applies just as well as UnCovered to her delightful versions of Sweet Love Shine, This Kiss and especially Simple Things, written after her treatment for breast cancer.
• Beth Nielsen Chapman plays Pocklington Arts Centre on February 12 and Harrogate Royal Hall on February 13.
