ALTHOUGH we are approaching the end of the pantomime season it is apparent that the Conservative/ Lib Dem opposition on City of York Council is determined to prolong it, as we approach the next council elections.
Once again (The Press, January 27, “Council budget documents leaked”) we have the leader of the Lib Dems decrying the options for cuts to council services (currently only under consideration), made necessary by his Tory/Lib Dem Government’s reductions to grants.
Like his colleagues, Coun Ayres and Reid and other Lib Dems, they oppose every saving made necessary by the actions of the Government they support, pretending that it’s nothing to do with them.
And in the same edition (“Chris Steward relishing the challenge”) the new leader of the Tory group, similarly condemns the cuts that his Government have made necessary, while pretending that the investment on capital projects, such as Reinvigorate York, can be substituted for ongoing revenue spending, such as road repairs.
One would have thought a stockbroker would know the difference!
Coun Sandy Fraser (Labour), Micklegate ward, Millfield Road, York.
