ALMOST 40 local traders were today heading to York for the first Farmers’ Market of the year.

The city-centre market is traditionally held on the last Friday of the month in Parliament Street and celebrates the best of local produce, including meat, fish, game, fruit, vegetables, bread and cheese, as well as gifts.

It trades from 9am to 5pm and will be held on the final Friday of every month this year, apart from when dates shift to October 24, November 21 and 22, and December 12 and 13.

Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “York is proud to hold certification status, adhering to strict criteria issued by the National Association of Farmers’ Markets, and our farmers, growers and producers are from within a 40-mile radius of York and bring fresh and often award-winning produce to our city-centre.”
