A 34-year-old man is this morning in police custody following a six-hour stand-off in Osbaldwick yesterday evening.
His relatives called in police at 7.56pm yesterday evening because they were worried about his safety. But the man refused to go with the officers. Police put a cordon around a house in Osbaldwick while they tried to persuade the man to give himself into their keeping.
A police spokesman said the man was in a "confused state of mind" and was threatening to harm himself. He was in the house by himself and refused to come out for hours while police kept the public away and talked to him. He eventually gave himself up at 1.54am this morning.
Following his detention a police spokesman thanked local residents for their patience and understanding during the incident. Police have denied social media reports that there had been a stabbing.
