TAXI drivers can be many things. Chauffeurs, of course. Tourist guides. Tellers of tall stories.

Now, in what may be the first example of its kind in the country, some taxi-drivers in York are taking on an altogether new role – as lifesavers.

Fleetways Taxis have teamed up with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to buy six defibrillators. Ten members of staff have been trained in the use of the electric paddles – used to restart the heart – and in other first aid techniques. What a brilliant idea. Often, in a medical emergency, the first few minutes are absolutely critical.

Taxi drivers, by their very nature, are often in the city centre – ideally placed to respond quickly. They won’t replace ambulances and paramedics, of course. But there will be occasions when they can get to an emergency that bit quicker, and can provide treatment and first aid until paramedics arrive. In some cases, that could make all the difference.

Fleetways is paying £6,500 itself for the defibrillator kits. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service, meanwhile, is providing the training, and installing special communication devices in cabs to alert drivers to an emergency nearby.

It may make for some interesting rides for passengers. But it’s a wonderful initiative, one which could set an example for similar schemes in other parts of the country.

Well done to all involved.
