TERRY Temple was crowned the 2014 YDP Masters Darts Open champion after a 4-1 victory over Rich Corner.
The Whitwell-on-the-Hill PDC professional averaged 88.62 in the final against Corner and threw four 180s, including two ton-plus finishes.
Temple set off with legs of 13-20-20-15-19 and 14 darts to open up a 3-0 set lead with Corner’s replies of 18 and 17 failing to stop him in his tracks.
Set four went to Corner with 18 and 17-dart legs, which was followed by an 18-dart opener in set five for Temple.
Corner, who averaged 82.73 in the final, then produced a 106 finish for 15 but, after missing darts at a double, allowed Temple to pocket the £1,000 winner’s prize by taking out a 120 shot for 18 darts. In the semi-finals of the Steamline Taxis and Red Dragon Darts-sponsored event at Huntington WMC, Corner whitewashed Yorkshire’s Graham Elvidge 3-0 with legs of 16-17-18-16-120 finish for 15 and 18 raising his average to 90.18, compared to his opponent’s 79.69.
Cleveland’s Alan Edwards, meanwhile, won the first set against with a 19-dart leg and a 121 finish for 15.
Temple responded, though, with 21 and 14 to level and then legs of 23-16-21 and 22 earned him a 3-1 victory.
Three 180s were also thrown by Temple, who averaged 76.90.
Edwards averaged 77.35 and claimed winning legs of 19 and 17.
Other 180s in the earlier rounds were enjoyed by Corner, Rab Mckenzie and Brian Dawson with three apiece.
John Quantock, Paul Bulmer and Alan Priestley threw two each with Temple, Elvidge, Scott Bennett, Lutz Leutzsch, Dave Scaum, Andy Senior, Edwards and Rick Harper all on one.
Further high checkouts were recorded by Jamie Ellam (150, 112 and 102), Tony Eccles (121 and 104), Dawson (116), Corner (101) and Quantock (100).
A week today will herald the start of the fourth Streamline Taxis York Open Darts Championship with ten ranking events leading to a Grand Finals in June.
