PUPILS at a York primary school have released 180 balloons to mark its change into a self-governing academy.
Haxby Road Primary School closed its doors on Friday and re-opened on Monday as Haxby Road Primary Academy, which also involves another primary, Robert Wilkinson in Strensall in an academy alliance.
Every child launched a balloon with their name on it to celebrate this new beginning. The sender of the balloon which goes the furthest will receive a new bike donated by Halfords.
Richard Ludlow, executive head teacher from the alliance, said every child in York deserved the very best education and it was the alliance’s responsibility to ensure all children succeeded.
He said: “The new academy pledges to provide an enriched exciting curriculum which will prepare the young people for their lives ahead.”
He added that the school was grateful for the support the local authority had given during the period of transition.
