MEMBERS of a York leisure centre are being urged to take part in a Tour de France challenge in the run-up to the race’s Grand Depart from the city in July.
Energise in Acomb wants its members to complete the total distance of the Tour – 3,656 kilometres or 2,271 miles – through cycling, walking, running, rowing, swimming or climbing at the centre. People can take part either individually or in teams.
Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure at City of York Council, said: “This is a fantastic challenge, inspired by one of the greatest sporting events in the world.
“Covering more than 3,000 km before July 6, when the Tour de France Grand Départ comes to York, is no mean feat.
“But this challenge is broken down into 21 manageable ‘routes’ which replicate the distances cycled on each of the Tour de France stages.”
She said participants could cover the distance at their own pace, in their own timescales, with help and advice from the Energise fitness team.
The individual winner and team winners will win either a Go Ape Tree Top Adventure or a Go Ape Segway Experience, courtesy of Go Ape.
