I READ with interest the sentence in Barbara Woodley’ letter of January 29: “Our grandpa John [no surname] was born around the corner from the site in Walmgate and served in the 1914-1918 war with his nine brothers”.
May I ask if this was John Calpin, the eldest brother, who is buried in York Cemetery?
If so, I think I may have some information regarding his brother William (Billy) Calpin, which may be of interest to Barbara Woodley.
