IT’S called rush hour with good reason. There’s breakfast to make and bathrooms to share – no wonder most of us set off late, especially on the school run.
But that doesn’t give parents an excuse to park where they want, just because it’s more convenient, and now head teachers are saying they have had enough.
Restrictions are there to stop inconsiderate parking because it is dangerous. So we welcome the launch of Parents’ Parking Promise, which is designed to encourage people to pledge their support, park a few streets away and then walk the rest of the way with their children.
For those who still think their needs are greater than others, a road safety camera car will be brought in to enforce restrictions outside schools.
That said there is even simpler way to tackle the issue. In York a third of primary pupils and ten per cent of secondary pupils are driven to school, but most journeys are less than a mile.
For those who have the time, we say why not do the whole thing on foot? It’s good for parents’ health and it’s good for their children’s health.
You might need to be a bit more organised first thing in the morning, though.
