WITH the saga of the Lendal Bridge closure ongoing, it was enlightening to see a spokesperson for City of York Council on ITV’s Calendar recently stating to camera, and with a straight face, that there was no evidence this was driving people away and that if proof was provided they would rethink, as it was not a “fait accompli”. Perhaps she should read The Press letters page.
People rely on sat-navs nowadays, and they cannot take into account the whims of a council which suddenly decides to close one of the main routes into a city.
It does seem rather counter-productive (or daft) to spend heaven knows how many thousands of pounds on a campaign encouraging people to visit York, and then to fine them when they do.
What are the odds that the closure will end after its so-called trial period?
It is a money-making scheme thought up to help fill the hole in the council coffers, and as such it will surely end up being a fait accompli.
