ANOTHER day, another hotel proposal in front of planners. It has been well documented in this paper that views on York’s level of accommodation vary greatly.

Some say because the city has one of the best bed occupancies in Britain, new hotels should be given the go-ahead. Others argue that cheap rooms attract an element the city could do without.

We understand both viewpoints, but one question planners should consider is the extra value a proposal brings.

Which is why we welcome the go-ahead for a hotel on land off Layerthorpe, because it will include completion of the James Street link road.

This scheme is vital to easing York’s congestion and with the Layerthorpe site presently an urban eyesore, this has to be a win-win solution.
