The list of successful graduates from the BRIT School is ever increasing. Kathleen Anne Brien, better known as Katy B, now joins Adel, Jessie J, Leona Lewis, Rizzle Kicks and The Feeling.
After the chart placing of debut CD On A Mission, Little Red is an anticipated release for the dubstep garage community. But whether that interest will reach to a larger audience remains to be seen. Katy B has a good clear voice, not dissimilar to Rihanna, and a songbook not far removed from Jessie J. In the looks department, many will see similarities with former members of Girls Aloud. And there lies the problem. There is little to distinguish Katy B from countless other pop acts in the search of a bona fide classic.
The best chance was perhaps Aaliyah, a dance track collaboration with Jessie Ware, which tells a similar lyrical story to Dolly Parton’s Jolene, but the track was lost on last year’s Danger EP. Hopefully next time around Katy B will have a stronger set of songs.
