A NORTH Yorkshire MP has criticised the potential loss of 800 jobs at a power station which is set to close by 2015.
Speaking in a Parliamentary debate, Nigel Adams, who represents Selby and Ainsty, said it was “unthinkable” that Eggborough Power Station – which last year provisionally failed to secure Government funding for a biomass conversion project – could go out of business just as many workers neared retirement.
He said there was “no sense” creating energy generation technology jobs overseas “when we have technology right on our doorstep”.
He said: “Eggborough is a cornerstone of industry for the region.
“We will continue fighting for this project because it is the right thing to do, not just for our energy security, but because of the hundreds of workers who are dependent on it for their livelihoods.”
