YORK is a beautiful and hospitable city. That is why so many visit it – not only to shop and go to restaurants or bars. It is also a place where some of us live, where we were born and brought up.
York’s identity is largely that of an ancient city formed long before motorised transport. There is no way all who wish to drive their cars into or through the city can be accommodated without destroying parts of York forever.
Fortunately for all of us, the vision of a city of worldwide renown was brought into focus by, for example, J.B. Morrell (author of City of Our Dreams’ and chairperson of the Civic Trust). City of York Council has been far-sighted by proposing to restrict traffic on Lendal Bridge as part of the redevelopment of the surrounding area of the centre. York is going to be even more beautiful, cleaner and easier to wander round in. There will be more space, better air quality, safer streets, more exercise for us in our precious city.
