I FULLY support the call made by Coun Andy D’Agorne (Letters, February 5) for a full review of the recent 5pm to midnight residents’ parking.
Success cannot be measured on the tinkle of retailers’ tills alone.
Some commentators to The Press website complained about having to drive round in circles trying to find a space.
This impacts on the efficiency of bus and taxi services, and inconveniences the holders of blue badges.
The “freedom” to choose to drive has encouraged many short local car journeys, and this must be balanced by discounted or free Park&Ride if the trial is repeated.
W Precious reminded me (Letters, February 5) that the freedom to drive is based on payment of road tax (actually VED, which is a tax on vehicle ownership), insurance and fuel duty.
He acknowledges that this goes into Whitehall coffers. But it is not ring-fenced by the Chancellor for roads. York’s only directly Government-funded road is the A64, to which all national taxation contributes.
All other roads in York are maintained by City of York Council, substantially from council tax income.
I hope Mr Precious enjoys the views of the queues as he exercises his freedom to drive. But please don’t complain about traffic when contributing to it.
Paul Hepworth, Windmill Rise, York.
