A TRADE union march through York has meant controversial traffic restrictions on a city-centre bridge will be lifted for one day only this weekend.
The Yorkshire and Humber TUC will be demonstrating on Saturday as the Barbican hosts the Liberal Democrats spring conference, and the march will affect a number of roads in the centre of York.
City of York Council said Lendal Bridge – which has been closed to private vehicles for six-and-a-half hours every day since the end of August during a traffic trial – will be open all day to prevent disruption.
Closure signs will be covered up and traffic cameras will not enforce the restrictions. The council says delays are likely between 10am and 3pm, particularly between 11.30am and 1pm while the march is taking place. Bus services will operate as usual but are likely to be delayed.
The march, protesting against government austerity measures, will include various trade unions, anti-cuts groups, health and environmental campaigners, people with disabilities and students.
It will leave Clifford’s Tower at 11.30am and head past the Barbican into the city-centre before returning to the Eye of York for 12.30pm.
