A MAN struggles down the steps at York Station; two ‘ugly sisters’ perform in the De Grey Rooms; and an anemone fish attacks its own reflection – just some of the moments captured in this latest batch of images by members of the York Photographic Society.

The anemone fish may look a lot like Nemo, from the film Finding Nemo: but it was aggression, not curiosity that was prompting him to peer so closely into photographer Morris Gregory’s lens.

The picture was taken during a scuba diving holiday in the Philippines. It was just a few months before the terrible storms that destroyed so many Philippines villages, says Morris, a York Photographic Society member and keen underwater photographer.

The fish saw its reflection in the underwater housing of Morris’ equipment, and decided to attack. “It did so several times and I was fortunate to anticipate its movement sufficiently well to get a couple of shots in open water and in focus,” Morris says.

From the far-off Philippines to York Station, and Harry Silcock’s image of a passenger struggling down steps encumbered by heavy luggage. The passenger isn’t the focus of this photograph, however, but the station itself, distorted into a series of curving, sweeping lines by the use of a fish-eye lens.

The two ‘Ugly Sisters’ in Nick Ansell’s photograph, meanwhile, were performers in the Tongue-Tied, Telling Tales and York Theatre Royal production of Cinderella held in the De Grey ballroom at the end of last year.

Other photographs featured on these pages today include York Photographic Society president Allan Harris’ image of late afternoon sunlight spilling across the stone flags in front of St William’s College; a soaring image taken looking up into the heights of the central tower at York Minster, also by Allan; and Roger Mockridge’s photograph of the former Olympic showjumper Harvey Smith, carrying the Olympic flame to York racecourse as it toured the country en route to London for the 2012 Olympics.
