HERE we go again. Joseph Rowntree Foundation is publishing yet more fairyland reports on how poverty is to be decreased by “policy initiatives” which boils down to employers providing “more jobs, better jobs” (The Press, February 7).
Just like that. Wave a magic wand and it is done.
Only it’s not that simple, is it? I have been an employer for 30 years and I know how hard it is to just stay in business, let alone miraculously create a load more meaningful employment with generous wages.
I suggest the authors of these reports vacate their ivory towers and start up businesses to show existing employers exactly how these numerous well-paid jobs can be created and sustained. Will they be manufacturing enterprises producing goods not previously known? Or firms providing a new service that will immediately attract fresh customers willing to pay handsomely to fill these bulging wage packets?
We need to know. Any task is easy for the person who doesn’t have to actually do it.
