I SAW the following slogan on one of the many No 44 buses recently: “University of York: 50 years changing the world”.
I don’t know about changing the world but it has certainly changed York, especially Heslington and the surrounding areas.
In The Press (February 28) we were told that in 2013 there were 3,677 student lets, which at one time were family homes, plus loss of approximately £3 million tax revenue because of exemption.
Why are the owners of these houses exempt from paying council tax, as they charge quite high rents from the students? Now the university says it may open a foundation college on the campus for a possible 700 more international students.
I hope that if it does happen they are accommodated on the campus, although in my humble opinion York does not need more students.
