May I correct the caption to the photograph which appeared on page 15 of The Press of February 13 which purports to show the last locomotive to visit Kirbymoorside (railway spelling) Station in the 1960s.
In fact it is of locomotive Class D49 No 62731 in the process of “running round” a Railway Correspondence & Travel Society special passenger train on June 23, 1957.
The porter/signalman can be seen handing a pouch containing the electric key token for the single line block section to Helmsley to the driver.
The last locomotive-hauled passenger train to arrive at Kirbymoorside was Class B1 No 61021 which hauled an enthusiasts’ rail tour from Whitby, thence to Coxwold, Grosmont, Middlesbrough, Hawes, Ripon and York on October 1, 1963. This proved to be the penultimate passenger train to Kirbymoorside, the last one being an eight-car diesel multiple unit ramblers’ excursion from Bradford Forster Square, and return, on May 3 1964.
Class J27 65894 hauled the last official freight train from Malton to Kirbymoorside, and return, on August 7, 1964.
