RISING City of York Athletic Club star Tom Somers underlined his potential with a gold medal-winning display in the 200 metres at the England Athletics Indoor Age Group Championships in Sheffield.
The 16-year-old won the under-20s national title in 21.13 seconds – an indoor personal best – taking the crown by four tenths of a second.
Queen Ethelburga’s School pupil Somers whose previous best indoors was 21.66 seconds, had earlier won his heat in 21.77 seconds and the semi-final in 21.36 seconds.
Coach Geoff Barraclough said: “I am overjoyed with his progress. He is looking good.
“We have not even got any speed work in yet. He is on his winter work. He is not peaking yet – he is running off his winter training.”
Fellow City of York athlete Lucy Hadaway won bronze in the U15s long jump with a leap of 5.19 metres, while Alice Linaker was ninth with 4.94 metres.
Hadaway was also 12th in the shot put with a throw of 8.42 metres, while York’s Ruth Aber came joint seventh in the U15s high jump on 1.50 metres and Rowan Palmour was eighth in the U17s high jump also with 1.50 metres.
