THE children of Skelton have been pedalling and scooting their way to school over the last few days as the school throws itself into the annual Big Pedal fortnight.
More than half of Skelton Primary School’s 109 pupils have got on their bikes since it started this week, putting their school into first place in York in its category and 18th place nationwide.
The Big Pedal is run by cycling charity Sustrans, and is a nationwide scheme to encourage children to get out of the car and onto their bikes for the school run.
It is being led at Skelton school by children’s champion Miriam Gunn, who said: “It’s been going really well. It’s encouraging the children to be a bit healthier and to cut down on pollution and congestion. They are really excited about it.”
The event runs for a fortnight and includes “decorate a bike” competitions in each class and posters all around school.
