I HAD only been dealing with a few physical impairments – until 100 metres of the inner ring road that is Lendal Bridge was closed. I am disabled.

It has cost me time, money, and energy (physical as well as petrol) and has forced us to keep our windows shut against the fumes from increased traffic.

Our street is a route around the closure but since I normally cross the bridge to reach the railway station it has turned a half-mile 15-minute trip into a 40-minute detour.

I have emails from Coun Dave Merrett, cabinet member for transport, refusing to permit Blue Badge users to save discomfort and time by using the bridge because “all badge holders in the whole UK” could cross the bridge.

Perish the thought of all those nasty disabled in his pro-abled city.

I have missed trains and now hate to leave the house due to traffic that has merely been shifted.

York clearly does not welcome or tolerate less than abled residents. And, no, I can’t afford taxis.

By the way why are taxis allowed over? Their passengers would be furious at the added cost and time, that’s why.

But it’s okay for York residents to deal with that, isn’t it?
