A RAFT of University of York teams won promotion in the latest round of British Universities and Colleges Sport fixtures.
The flagship match involved the netball firsts, who were undefeated all season and needed one win from their final two matches to secure promotion. They did it the easy way, defeating promotion rivals Sheffield 52-42.
Instrumental to their victory was Grace Clarke, who barely missed a shot. The netball seconds are safe in mid-table following a thrilling 45-44 victory against Northumbria, scoring twice in the final minute to snatch victory.
All four men’s football sides won, with the firsts completing a routine 3-0 victory against Leeds Met to secure the league title and promotion to Northern 2B. Goals came from Jamie Trant and James Davies (2).
The seconds were also able to secure promotion with a game in hand, seven points clear of their nearest rivals, after a 2-0 win against Northumbria. The York mixed golf side finished their season top of the table to gain promotion to Northern 1A.
A 4-2 victory against promotion candidates Manchester pushed York six points clear to cap a fantastic season off with a win.
The women’s rugby union team provided a fifth promotion, sealing it with a rare 0-0 draw against promotion rivals Durham.
The side finished the year with a points difference of plus 296 from eight matches.
The men’s hockey seconds went into their game against Newcastle knowing a win would see them promoted and they won 1-0 with Joe Hubbard scoring.
