A CLEARANCE of 78 helped Steve Gregson book his place in the quarter-finals of the York Masters snooker tournament.

The Huntington player beat Jordan Worobec 3-1 and claimed the competition’s highest break in the opener.

Gregson made it 2-0 in a hard-fought second frame, which he won 49-29, but Worobec got on the board with some excellent safety play and good long pots to claim a 55-15 success.

Any hope of a comeback was short-lived when a missed blue, with a number of reds in the open, allowed Gregson to win 61-19.

Tim Lister came through a tough match to beat Adam Scaife 3-1. The first two frames were tied but Lister, the Scruton Cup winner, took his place in the last eight by winning the next two.

Dan Potter beat Bootham’s Paul Mahoney 3-0. Potter took control early on and never looked back.

Glen Mountain became the last man into the quarter-finals with a 3-1 triumph over Acomb’s Roland Cox.

Both players struggled through the match but it was Mountain who won the opening frame 48-28 thanks to a number of good long pots on the colours.

Cox responded well in frame two, potting a good blue and pink to level the match.

With the match poised at one a piece, a 28 break by Mountain, with some good long pots, gave him the edge and, despite Cox’s best efforts, Mountain won the fourth frame 52-44 to seal his place.
