AUTHORITIES in Selby have said they will continue to prosecute people who urinate in the street after a case was thrown out by magistrates.

Nykysha Young, 21, of Johnson Street, Selby, appeared at York and Selby Magistrates’ Court, charged under a Selby District Council bylaw with public urination, which she denied.

Magistrates dismissed the case and ordered Selby District Council to pay defence costs, but Tracey Young, Nykysha’s mother, said she believed it could mean more than 100 previous prosecutions under the bylaw could be reopened.

A spokesman for Selby District Council said there were no plans to look again at the previous prosecutions.

He said: “Each case is treated on its own merits.”
