YOUNGSTERS and their fathers at a York primary school took part in an initiative to encourage reading at home.
Pupils at Woodthorpe School took part in FRED or Fathers Reading Every Day, a City of York Council-backed initiative urging dads to take a more active role in children’s development through regular reading.
FRED encourages dads to spend 15 minutes a day for two weeks reading with their children, then 30 minutes a day for the next two weeks.
Each father documents the amount of time spent reading to their children and the number of books read, with a special event at the end of the four weeks to celebrate their achievements.
Coun Janet Looker, cabinet member for education, said: “We already have some great dads, teachers, care workers and volunteers in York and this initiative is about celebrating the work they do and encouraging other men to get involved.”
Woodthorpe is one of a number of schools, children’s centres and day care providers across the city to join FRED.
Anyone who has a child aged two to four years old and would like to get involved, should contact their local children’s centre for more information.
