TEACHERS and students from Archbishop Holgate’s CE Academy will take 250 football shirts with them to South Africa next month as part of an international scheme.
Ten students and two members of staff will travel to Cape Town as part of the school's link with the local diocese, which has run for the last ten years.
The shirts - donated by York City FC sponsors Benenden Health following a rebrand - will be donated to community projects in the township of Khayelitsha, Cape Town, including the charity Fikelela which works with those infected by HIV or AIDS, and The Warehouse, which works with homeless and destitute people.
Amy Goodman, media relations executive at Benenden Health said: “When we rebranded last year, we offered the York City fans new shirts in place of their old ones. We really wanted to ensure that the old shirts went to benefit good causes domestically and internationally. I’ll be waving the students off in a few weeks-time and wish them every success with their community work in South Africa.”
