I READ with interest your article ‘New drive to get people into Sport’ (The Press, March 13), I have a point to make.
I’m sure many of your readers are familiar with a Jamaican by the name of Bolt who carries all before him in the sprints in whatever championship he deigns to enter. I’m sure that they are also aware that he is taller than all the other guys he comes up against.
Should you watch a replay of any of his races you will see that his fellow competitors are running just as quickly as he. He wins because he has the greater stride.
Surely this is unfair.
Now in the paraplegic games they categorise entrants by the degree of their handicap. Is it not time something like this is done in ordinary athletics?
The tall guys should be given a handicap in the high jump, the tubby ones in the shot-put, the little skinny ones in the long distances, and so on.
In this day and age, when we are trying to encourage people to participate more in sports, I would suggest that such a system would go a long way to giving our ‘underachievers’ a level playing field on which to compete and fire in them the belief that they too can attain greatness.
